  • Summer Opportunities

    Google Summer of Code 2013 is designed to encourage college student
    participation in open source development. Begun in 2005, the program has several goals, which are the following: Inspire young developers to begin participating in open source development, provide students in Computer Science and related fields the opportunity to do work related to their academic pursuits during the summer, give students more exposure to real world software development scenarios (e.g., distributed development, software licensing questions, mailing list etiquette, etc.), get more open source code created and released for the benefit of all, and help open source projects identify and bring in new developers and committers.

    They will be offering successful student contributors a 5,000 USD stipend, enabling them to focus on their coding projects for three months. This program is done completely online. Students and mentors from more than 100 countries have participated in past years.

    Passport2College offers high school juniors an opportunity to earn college credits while still enrolled in high school! DeVry University offers students courses in Business, Math, Psychology, and English. Class schedules provide flexibility while giving you an in-depth knowledge from professors with real-world experience.

    Summer Camps

    Missouri S&T offers Jackling Intro to Engineering to the juniors and seniors of next year! Through this camp not only will students explore their career options, they will also work hands-on in a variety of labs and gain valuable skills. Three sessions are available: June 9-13, June 23-27, and July 7-11. Register online before all the openings are filled!

    Missouri S&T will also be offering many other camps including a CyberMiner Camp for students interested in software design, programming and other digital technologies, a Robotics Camp, and many other camps! Check out all of their summer opportunities!!

    Park University will be offering a week-long, in-depth look at business, ethics, free enterprise, teamwork, and personal skills that will better prepare you for life after high school and beyond. The camp will occur from June 9th through the 14th. Application will be available on the School of Business Page soon.

    Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri will be offering a week-long course to prepare you for Game Designing, App Development, Robotics Engineer, Film Making, Web Design, and even 3D Animation. Check out the link provided for course availability. There are many opportunities within the months of June and July to take a course of your choosing!

    National Student Leadership Conference will invite a select group to participate in its fast-paced, high-level, interactive summer program for high school students. The NSLC provides students with the opportunity to experience life on a college campus; develop essential leadership skills; and explore a future career through exciting simulations, exclusive site visits and interactive meetings with renowned leaders in their chosen field.

    The University of Alabama Department of Computer Science within the College of Engineering will host a series of Computer Science camps from July 8th-August 2nd, 2013. Both Middle School and High School camps are available.

    UMKC ID Tech Summer Camp, ages 7 - 17, ID Tech is hosting a weeklong summer camp that will include days and overnight where you will have the opportunity to learn coding, 3D printing, video production, drones, video game design and much more.

    High School students have the option to stay in our dormitories as residential campers (the 2012 camps had students attending from 13 states, as well as Hong Kong and Beijing). Students will be taught multiple topics of Computer Science while learning to program a computer in several exciting contexts (e.g., game programming in Java and Scratch, robotics, and Android smartphone programming in App Inventor). 

    The Computer Science camps are taught by faculty and staff in a manner that encourages self-exploration and inquiry-based learning across multiple projects.
