  • World War II in France

    Brandi Pruente's French IV and V students educated participants regarding the different aspects of World War II in France last week. Prior to this, students attended the Auschwitz Exhibit at Union Station (thanks the wonderful LPS Foundation committee), read several letters from people who fought and experienced the war, and watched a film about the roundup that occurred in Paris, France.  Each student chose a specific role or aspect of the war to present.



    Teacher Reflection:  I was surprised by the students’ level of interest and contemplative perspective on this very serious time in history.  They really delved into the stories behind the war events.

  • One Artist to Another

    Essential Question: How has art been used to raise awareness, explore root causes, express dissent or highlight solutions related to equity, justice or inclusion in our society or around the world?

    Students engaged in a research assignment meant to broaden the collective understanding of the topic and to inform future artwork.  They identified an artist whose works explore ideas related to equity, justice, dissent or inclusion.

  • Physical Science

    Ask any teacher and they will say that grading is the worst part of the job. However, when your students are asked to share their understanding in a way beyond the traditional test, it gets interesting. Thy Trieu’s physical science students have produced some amazing learning products. 


    Teacher reflection: I actually enjoy assessing this way. It definitely makes grading easier!

  • Lewis and Clark Visit Success

    On Wednesday our 4th Grade Trailblazers came to LNHS to share their Titanic Research! They unloaded at the front of what will be their High School in just a few years. They walked into the entrance to the beat of the the Eagle Drumline and beamed from ear to ear.
    A Chance to Showcase.  As you know and as we have lived, it felt amazing to take our learning out and share in front of YOUR 9th and 10th graders. Our students went from Nervous to Confident in a matter of minutes due to your hospitality, feedback, and warm welcome as they shared.  Thank you for the continued partnership and the chance we can give our Trailblazers an authentic audience.

  • Research with an Impact

    Students in Wendy Turner's class are defining and finding strategies for resilience. Through research into trauma, child abuse, and parenting styles, they learned some tools and tips for children. Students had a choice of sharing their learning through a learning menu.   • Global Awareness

    Advanced ELA 12 students in Katie Mitchell’s classes have gained more perspective than most regarding current events. Their goals include gaining critical reading skills, responding thoughtfully to diverse perspectives including those presented in diverse media; synthesize claims made on all sides of an issue, and, when warranted, qualify or justify their own views. 

    The learning began with viewing a TED talk by novelist Chimamanda Adichie titled The Danger of a Single Story. She “tells the story of how she found her authentic cultural voice -- and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding.”  The setting of their upcoming novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, happens to be Afghanistan and with the country making national news on a daily basis, Mitchell capitalized on her many connections in the community and arranged multiple guest speakers to broaden her students' perspectives.

  • Intro to Culinary & International Culinary are busy cooking!

    Intro to Culinary has been studying knife safety and practicing different knife cuts.  They demonstrated all they've learned about safety, cutting station set-up and knife cuts during their pico de gallo lab! They were AWESOME!!!



    International Culinary has been exploring food culture, herbs/spices, and staple foods of families around the world. Today they made a stable food item from scratch - homemade tortillas! Mixing, kneading, and rolling dough. This was a fun first lab to get them comfortable in their kitchens and ready to explore new regions and the cuisines around the world!



    I'm so proud of how well they executed their time management and knowledge through these hands-on learning experiences!

  • Not your average assessment

    Thy Trieu asked her Theoretical Chemistry students to take a creative approach to sharing their understanding of acids and bases. Not a traditional test, not a paper, not an experiment, but a creative attempt. The artwork and knowledge shared about acid rain below is an example from a student who went above and beyond to share both her knowledge and art. Kudos to Ms. Trieu and her students!

  • Media Bias Analysis

    Elizabeth Rudell’s ELA students have been reading hard news stories and analyzing them sentence-by-sentence. What are they looking for? Bias. They evaluated the expression, veracity, and the graphics/headline of each article from a news source and ultimately determined if it was properly acclaimed as an unbiased news source through analysis of both daily reporting and the history of the news source. 

    They knocked it out of the park with their research and sharing their findings!

  • Listen Up: Civil Liberties and Civil Rights

    Dan Luellen is always asking his students to think about the government and the impact it has on their lives. His government students dug into the civil liberties and civil rights they cared about and considered the power that it takes to create change. During a socratic seminar these juniors unpacked the difficulty of living in a “cancel” culture, the guarded nature of people this year, and the dehumanizing power of social media.

    Thinking about the back and forth between "we the people" and the people in charge they dug into the means to get those in power to listen.  Students created an analysis of a song that brought attention to an societal issue that falls within the spectrum of civil liberties or civil rights.  Through researching the historical and modern context students considered the impact the song did or did not have on society. Below are the songs they chose and few of the presentation slides they shared.
